From Carbon Literacy to Carbon Bookkeeping: TCS Guernsey’s New Service Development Story
In less than a year, TCS Guernsey went from completing Carbon Literacy training to launching a new carbon bookkeeping service, generating local press coverage and starting client conversations they had not expected.
For accountants and bookkeepers, this is where sustainability becomes commercially useful. It is not just about understanding climate change. It is about building the confidence, context and practical knowledge to support clients with the questions they are starting to ask.
Why TCS Guernsey chose Carbon Literacy training
TCS Guernsey is an ICB practice based in Guernsey, providing bookkeeping, year-end accounts, payroll and advisory services to businesses across Guernsey, Jersey and the UK, alongside its UK practice, Sixtyfive Group.
Founded in 2019, the practice has grown to a team of eight and is passionate about developing trainees, creating career opportunities and supporting the hospitality sector, which it specialises in.
For Millie, Operations Manager at TCS Guernsey, Carbon Literacy training with Sustainability Suite came at the right time. Through the practice’s close relationship with Sage, TCS had already been introduced to carbon accounting via Sage Earth. The next step was finding training that connected carbon accounting with the wider climate context.
“The Carbon Literacy training with Sustainability Suite was a perfect fit, with it being aimed at accountants and advisors. The course combined both the practical carbon accounting knowledge with wider climate change education, which I found provided valuable context around why this work matters beyond regulatory reasons.”
Turning Carbon Literacy into a new service
Since completing the course, Millie has developed what carbon bookkeeping looks like for TCS. That included mapping out the service, thinking through pricing, and working out how it could be communicated to existing clients.
This is where the support from Sustainability Suite continued beyond the training itself.
“Alex, who delivered the training, was clearly passionate about the subject, which made it that much more engaging, while Olivia’s support after the course, from certification through to helping shape and market our services, was invaluable. I couldn’t have launched the new service line without them.”
The result was not just more knowledge. It was a practical new service line that TCS could take to market.
Creating client conversations and momentum
The response from clients has already been positive. TCS has generated local press coverage and opened up conversations with clients who may not have raised the topic of carbon accounting without being prompted.
“I was surprised at how many clients were interested in the service but may never have raised the topic unless prompted.”
That is an important lesson for other practices. Many clients may not yet be asking directly for carbon bookkeeping, carbon accounting or sustainability support, but that does not mean the need is not there. Sometimes the conversation starts when the adviser has the confidence to raise it.
For TCS, Carbon Literacy training has not just supported one person’s development. The practice has now enrolled another team member onto the training and sees carbon bookkeeping becoming an increasingly important service as the accountancy and bookkeeping profession continues to evolve.
What other accountants and bookkeepers can learn from TCS
TCS Guernsey’s story shows how Carbon Literacy training can move beyond awareness and into action.
For accountancy and bookkeeping practices, the opportunity is not only to understand sustainability better. It is to use that understanding to support clients, develop advisory services and open up commercially useful conversations.
As more businesses are asked about carbon data, supply chain emissions, reduction plans and sustainability evidence, accountants and bookkeepers are well placed to help clients make sense of the numbers.
TCS has shown what that can look like in practice: start with training, build confidence, shape the service, and then begin the client conversations.
Millie’s advice for others
For any business or practice considering taking the next step, Millie’s advice is clear:
“I would encourage any business considering taking the next step to get in touch with both the team at Sustainability Suite, but also the wider community, and you will find all the support and encouragement you need.”
That wider support matters. Carbon bookkeeping and carbon accounting are still developing areas for many practices, so being part of a community can help firms move faster and with more confidence.
